Women are still under-represented in academia. This is despite the fact that, in many subjects, more women than men actually begin their studies. But as they climb the career ladder, the proportion of women in academia declines: in 2024, around 30 per centExternal link of all professorships in Germany were held by women.
What are the reasons for this? What are women's experiences in academia? These issues will be discussed in the panel discussion ‘Women in Academia’. The discussion will cover, among other things, gender stereotypes and bias in everyday academic life, the Academic Employment Law (WisszeitVG), balancing family life with an academic career, and measures to improve the situation of women in academia. The talk will be in German.
On the podium will be:
- Jun.-Prof. Dr. Amrei BahrExternal link (University Stuttgart, #IchbinHanna),
- Jun.-Prof. Dr. Sarah J?ger?de (Theologie, University Jena)
- Lisa NiendorfExternal link (Humboldt University Berlin, @FrauForschung)
- Prof. Dr. Isabelle Staude (Physik, University Jena)
Moderation:
- Valentine Weigel, Emily von Gagern (Honours students of University of Jena)
The panel discussion is part of the Honours Programme’s Evening Talks series. In this series of events, early-career researchers offer students insights into their academic careers and share what has helped them in the world of academia, as well as how they have dealt with setbacks, for example.
After the event, there will be a buffet where participants can discuss the topics. Attendance is free of charge and open to anyone interested. To help us with planning, please?register in advance.
The event is organised in collaboration with the ‘Women Professors Programme’ of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space and the Jena ‘Scientists and Careers Jena’ network.
