Spaces and Times of Colonialism. European Practices of Dominance From the Early Modern Period to the Present Day.

Book presentation at the Leipzig Book Fair, Hall 2, Booth 301, Forum Unibund.

Debates about colonial pasts usually focus on European colonial history in the 19th and 20th centuries. This book opens up a cross-epochal perspective from the 16th century to the present day. In addition to Europe, it also considers the Spanish colonial empire in South America, the Russian Empire, South Africa, South Asia, and the Malay Archipelago. This shows that colonialism has a long and complex history in which the rise, decline, and persistence of colonial phenomena are intertwined. At the same time, it critically examines what can be considered colonial in specific places, practices, and ideas, and what continuities, breaks, and gray areas reveal themselves from a trans-epochal perspective. In this way, the book encourages a nuanced understanding of colonialism.

Editors Prof. Anja Lauk?tter and Prof. Kim Siebenhüner discuss their latest book publication with Prof. Dr. Matthias Middel (University of Leipzig). The discussion is part of a joint presentation by the Universities of Halle, Jena, and Leipzig at the Leipzig Book Fair. The volume is published by B?hlau-Verlag:
