Programme summary

The German-taught master's programme in Sport Governance in Jena provides the necessary knowledge to responsibly perform management and decision-making functions in sport and to shape its future in a sustainable manner. Today more than ever, sports organisations need leaders who understand the economic, social and political challenges facing sport and are able to respond to them competently.

The particular relevance of these skills becomes clear when one considers the diverse challenges and profound processes of change that sports organisations are currently facing. Here are just a few examples:

  • Increasingly complex organisational and management structures (e.g. numerous forms of sports organisations, multi-level system of sports associations, coexisting funding systems).
  • Ever-increasing interconnection between social sectors in sports (government, market and non-profit sector).
  • Persistent problems such as doping, discrimination and corruption, the solution of which is not only in the interest of sport, but in the interest of society as a whole.

Against this backdrop, traditional management tools are no longer sufficient for leadership positions in sport. Those responsible for sport are called upon to critically review existing structures, take corrective action and actively address the dynamic conditions surrounding sport. Responsible and sustainable action requires the systematic consideration of ethical standards and the political, economic and legal framework conditions.

The Master of Arts programme "Sport Governance: Organisation and Regulation in Sport" was developed in response to the changing requirements of the industry. It is an interdisciplinary programme involving two faculties of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. The programme provides in-depth knowledge of national and international organisational structures in sports and its interconnections with business, politics and society. In addition to theoretical knowledge, practical knowledge is also taught, which is reinforced through project work, case studies and a field trip lasting several days.

Special features in Jena

  • Interdisciplinarity: Against the backdrop of current developments, the master's programme enables its graduates to conduct in-depth analysis, systematically link and reflectively respond to economic, political, legal and social issues in sport. The programme is supported by several institutes and chairs at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, which strengthens its interdisciplinary orientation in the long term.
  • Uniqueness: Due to its innovative and holistic content, this master's programme is unique in Germany in this form. Comparable programmes can be found sporadically throughout Europe, but most of them are fee-based.
  • Topicality: The programme focuses on the key current and future challenges facing sports organisations and prepares students specifically for dynamic developments in the context of sport.
  • Partner collaboration: The programme benefits from an extensive and established network of experts from numerous partner organisations who are actively involved in teaching through guest lectures, field trips and project-based teaching formats.
  • Optimal support: Most courses are deliberately kept small. This allows for a high degree of interactivity and ensures that lecturers can respond individually to students' needs, interests and questions.
  • Strong practical orientation: The programme focuses on interactive teaching and learning concepts that specifically build a sustainable bridge between theory and practice. A particular added value lies in the consistent transfer of scientific findings to specific fields of action and decision-making processes in sports organisations.

Career opportunities

Due to the interdisciplinary character of the course, graduates have a wide range of fields of activities, in particular:

  • in the sports sector (e.g. sports associations and clubs)
  • in sports-related areas of the market sector (e.g. corporate social responsibility, sustainability, marketing or sponsoring)
  • in politics (e.g. state sports support, international sports relations)
  • in public administrations (e.g. sports administration, sports offices)
  • in civil society and development organisations

On the other hand, the basis for subsequent scientific qualifications (e.g. doctorate) is laid with the completion of the master¡¯s degree.
